Measurement of Resting Energy Expenditure (REE)

Measuring your resting energy expenditure (REE) is the most reliable way to determine exactly how many calories your body actually needs.

At the clinics CarE MediCclinics, measurements are taken using state-of-the-art indirect calorimetry (Canopy), providing personalized data on nutrition, exercise, and metabolic health.

What Is Basal Metabolic Rate (REE)?

Basal metabolic rate (Resting Energy Expenditure – REE) represents the energy your body consumes at complete rest to maintain basic functions such as:

  • breath
  • blood circulation
  • brain and organ function
  • temperature control

It is the foundation of any proper diet and exercise program.

The main roles of metabolism are:

  • Conversion of food into the energy required for cellular processes
  • Conversion to protein, fat, and carbohydrate content
  • Emissions of nitrogen compounds

The rate at which the metabolism converts food into usable energy is referred to as the metabolic rate. The minimum amount of energy the body needs to survive is called the basal metabolic rate (BMR) or REE.

Why Is the REE Measurement Important?

By accurately measuring metabolism, we can:

  • determine actual caloric needs
  • design a personalized nutrition plan
  • adjust the exercise properly
  • identify a metabolic slowdown
  • assess hormonal and thyroid disorders

Without REE measurements, most guidelines are based on general calculations.

How the exam is conducted

The measurement is performed using the Canopy system and is simple and painless:

  1. The examinee is at rest (usually having fasted)
  2. He is breathing normally through a special device
  3. Oxygen consumption (VO₂) and CO₂ production are recorded
  4. Basal metabolic rate is calculated with precision

⏱ Duration: about 15–20 minutes

Who is this intended for?

The REE measurement is ideal for:

  • people who want to lose weight or manage their weight
  • people who are obese or have metabolic syndrome
  • people with thyroid disorders or hormonal imbalances
  • people who have tried diets unsuccessfully or regained weight
  • athletes looking to optimize their performance

Safety and Reliability

  • non-invasive test
  • without pain or side effects
  • immediate results
  • high accuracy (gold standard method)
