WHAT IS IT?
The pacemaker and/or defibrillator can communicate with a programmer via an external skin contact by placing a probe over the location of the device.
WARNING!
For every pacemaker or defibrillator manufacturer, there is a specific programmer from that same company. There is currently NO programmer compatible with all device brands. For this reason, it is ESSENTIAL that we know the brand and manufacturer of our device. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your pacemaker or defibrillator, please contact the cardiovascular department at CarE MediC.
Pacemaker and Defibrillator Programmers
INDICATIONS
Typically, the device’s operation is evaluated, and it is verified that the battery and electrodes are functioning properly. The device can be checked systematically by appointment or, in special cases, on an ad hoc basis following the onset of symptoms.
HOW IT WORKS
When the programmer and the device communicate, valuable information is retrieved from the device’s memory, and it is possible to change or modify the original programmed settings if necessary. We usually begin by assessing the remaining lifespan of the generator (battery), and we can estimate its duration with relatively good accuracy. The function of the electrodes is tested, and we verify that the electrical current to and from the myocardium is adequate. Certain parameters may also be adjusted based on the findings.
ARE THERE ANY RISKS?
There are few, if any, risks during the examination. During the device testing and calibration, you may occasionally experience mild dizziness or a rapid heartbeat.
