The spectrum of cardiovascular diseases includes conditions such as coronary artery disease, heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias), valvular heart disease, heart failure from various causes, and congenital heart disease—that is, heart conditions present from birth.

Symptoms

The symptoms of cardiovascular disease depend on the type of heart disease you have.

Symptoms of heart disease affecting the coronary arteries (atherosclerotic disease)

The symptoms of coronary artery disease may differ between men and women. For example, men are more likely to experience chest pain, while women are more likely to have other symptoms along with chest discomfort, such as shortness of breath, nausea, and fatigue.
Symptoms may include:

Pain, tightness, pressure, or discomfort in the chest (angina)

 Difficulty breathing (dyspnea)

Pain, numbness, weakness, or a cold sensation in your feet or hands if the blood vessels in those parts of your body are constricted

Pain in the neck, jaw, upper abdomen, or back

A person may not have been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, and the first symptom may be a heart attack, angina, stroke, or heart failure. It’s important to monitor your symptoms and discuss them with your doctor. Cardiovascular disease can sometimes be detected early through regular checkups and evaluations.

Symptoms of heart disease caused by abnormal heartbeats (cardiac arrhythmias)

An arrhythmia is an abnormal heartbeat. The heart may beat too fast, too slow, or irregularly. Symptoms of a heart arrhythmia may include:

“Fluttering” in your chest

 Rapid Heartbeat (Tachycardia)

 Slow heart rate (bradycardia)

 Chest pain or discomfort

 Difficulty breathing

 Dizziness

Fainting (syncope—an episode of sudden loss of consciousness) or near-fainting (pre-syncope episode)

Symptoms caused by congenital heart defects

Severe congenital heart defects (congenital heart disease) usually appear shortly after birth. Symptoms of heart failure in children may include:

Light gray or blue skin color (cyanosis)

Swelling in the legs, abdomen, or around the eyes

In infants, difficulty breathing while breastfeeding, resulting in poor weight gain.

Less severe congenital heart defects are often not diagnosed until later in childhood or in adulthood. Signs and symptoms of congenital heart defects that are not usually immediately life-threatening include:

An increased need to breathe during exercise or an activity

Easy fatigue during exercise or an activity

Swelling in the hands, ankles, or feet

Symptoms of heart disease caused by heart failure (cardiomyopathy)

In the early stages of cardiomyopathy, there may be no symptoms. As the condition worsens, symptoms may include:

Intolerance during exercise or at rest

Swelling of the lower extremities, ankles, and feet

Easy Fatigue

Irregular heartbeat

Dizziness and Fainting

Symptoms Caused by Heart Infections

Endocarditis is an infection that affects the inner lining that separates the chambers and valves of the heart (the endocardium). Symptoms of a heart infection may include:

Fever

Difficulty breathing

Weakness or fatigue

Swelling in the lower extremities or abdomen

Changes in Heart Rate

Dry or persistent cough

Skin rashes or unusual spots

Symptoms of heart disease caused by valvular heart disease

The heart has four valves—the aortic, mitral, the pulmonary valve, and the tricuspid valve—which open and close to direct blood flow through your heart. Valves can be damaged by a variety of conditions that lead to stenosis or insufficiency. Depending on which valve is malfunctioning, the symptoms of valvular heart disease resemble those of heart failure and generally include:

Fatigue

Difficulty breathing

Irregular heartbeat

Swollen feet or ankles

Chest pain

Fainting (syncope)

Overview Cardiovascular disease refers to a range of conditions that affect the function or structure of your heart.
