If the thyroid is enlarged, it is classified as a goiter. Nodular formations in the thyroid parenchyma may also be detected. Depending on the size of the nodules and their ultrasound characteristics, further evaluation via fine-needle aspiration (FNA)\u2014which is a type of biopsy\u2014may be necessary. The endocrinologist will evaluate the characteristics of the nodules and, based on that, recommend further investigation to rule out malignancy.
